表示对过去事情的假设，意思是 “本能够做某事而没有做”。

英语中的这种用法属于虚拟语气，表达的是说话人的主观想法或意图，并不是陈述客观事实，往往期望的结果与过去发生的事实恰相反。所以叫虚拟语气，或者叫主观语气更贴切一些。
